Bontrager 29-Inch Wheels
29-inch (29er) is the most common wheel size used on mountain bikes today. The outside diameter of the wheel with a mounted tire measures approximately 29 inches, although the exact rim diameter is 644mm. These measurements are usually marked on the sidewall of the tire. Interestingly, road bikes share the exact same rim dimeter (644mm), although mountain rims are wider and stouter.
29ers are popular for several reasons. We've listed a few below:
- 29ers roll smoother. One of the first things anyone notices when riding their first 29er is how easily they seem to roll over obstaces. This isn't just a perceived benefit. 29-inch wheels actually have a shallower angle of attack when approaching square-edged objects. You could also think of the objects as being smaller. The result is improved rollover ability.
- 29ers are faster. True, small wheels accelerate faster than large wheels. The bigger the wheel, the more material and rotational weight is placed near the rim. However, the quick acceleration usually isn't enough to offset the advantage gained using a larger wheel that covers more distance per pedal revolution.
- 29ers provide more traction. The larger outside circumference of the mounted tire means that the contact patch is longer. More rubber is always in contact with the ground. More traction is always a good thing.
Smoother, faster, and more traction. For stability and confidence, 29ers definitely deserve your attention. Take a look at our Bontrager 29-inch wheel selection below:
